I attended UTI (Houston) right out of high school. I graduated in 1987 with the associate's degree in Auto and Diesel Technology.
Even with their placement help, it took about nine months to find a job at the time, as in Beaumont, TX the market was flooded. I was able to get a job working for the local Toyota dealer finally, and it was uphill from there. I worked for multiple car lines for a total of 15 years and then left the industry to take a position with an Oil and Gas company as a maintenance tech. My training and experience have propelled me within this company, all the way to the corporate office and am currently a business analyst in the Maintenance and Reliability group.
A much better position than I could have achieved without my training that stimulated my thought process and spurred me to be a successful technician. I left the auto industry with 4 Master level awards from Toyota, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and finally BMW.
The abilities I developed based on the UTI training is has placed me in a position that I am in demand by all the company field personnel for help with their issues on a daily basis. I have recently decided to go back to school to achieve a bachelor's degree and found that the associate's degree from UTI is not suitable for transfer of any credits to a traditional university, but I would not trade anything for the experience I had while there.
